Raouché Beirut Backbone
Each piece is hand-formed. Dimensions may vary ±5mm from listed measurements. Minor surface variations are characteristic of the firing process.
This piece emerges from a series of coastal explorations where the artist studied the mineral formations left behind by receding tide lines. Each vessel in this collection carries the imprint of natural erosion — an irregular silhouette, a surface roughness that invites touch.
The clay body was sourced locally and allowed to dry naturally over six weeks before a single bisque firing at 1060°C. No glaze was applied to the exterior; instead, the raw terracotta skin was burnished by hand, then fired a second time in a pit with organic material to create the characteristic carbon-smoked patina.
All pieces in this collection are hand-built using coiling and pinching techniques — no wheel is used. The artist begins each form with a base of reclaimed clay wedged with local sand to achieve the textured, porous quality characteristic of the series.
After hand-forming, pieces rest for 4–6 weeks before any firing begins. This extended drying period allows micro-cracks to form naturally, which are then sealed during bisque firing at low temperature. The final atmospheric firing in a pit kiln produces the unique carbon marks and mineral blushes visible on each piece.
Unglazed ceramics are porous and require specific care. Avoid prolonged contact with water; wipe clean with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge or place in a dishwasher.
If used as a vase, line with a glass vessel or use a sealed liner. The exterior patina will naturally develop with age and handling — this is considered a desirable quality of the piece, not a flaw. Store away from direct sunlight, which may cause slight colour shift in areas with high iron content.
